How to play

  1. Print the board (page 1) and the card pages for the words you’re practicing.
  2. Cut out the cards along their outside edge. The short marks in the margin line up with the card edges if you use a paper cutter.
  3. Usually each player has a different word: one plays “was”, the other plays “the”. Any card style works.
  4. Playing with the same word? Give each player a different card style, for example white on sage and white on gold, so you can tell whose cards are whose.
  5. Take turns: read your word out loud, then place the card in an empty square. First to get three in a row wins.
A game of “was”: white on sage wins on the diagonal.

The cards are plain on purpose: one clear word, no X or O, no patterns, in a font with the simple “a” and “t” children learn to write. Each card is 2.25 inches square and fits inside a board square with a little room to spare.

One word at a time

Each word is a 2-page PDF, 9 cards in each card style. Handy for reprinting lost cards.

Printing tips

  • Print on US Letter at 100% / Actual size. “Fit to page” shrinks the cards and the board.
  • Any home printer works: nothing prints closer than about 0.4 inch to the paper edge.
  • Card stock makes cards that last. Store each word’s A and B cards in its own envelope.
