The Orton-Gillingham (OG) approach is a method of teaching reading and spelling, designed primarily for individuals with dyslexia but beneficial for all students learning to read. Core features of the OG approach include:

  • Multi-sensory Learning: OG engages multiple senses—visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile—to reinforce learning and ensure concepts are mastered.

  • Structured, Sequential, and Cumulative: Instruction begins with the simplest concepts and builds to more complex ones. Each new step is based on mastering the previous one, creating a solid foundation for reading and spelling.

  • Explicit and Direct Instruction: Skills are taught explicitly and directly, leaving no assumptions about prior knowledge. Your child receives clear, targeted instruction at each step.

  • Diagnostic and Prescriptive: OG instruction is highly individualized. Cheryl continuously assesses your child’s progress and adjusts her teaching methods based on their evolving needs.

  • Cognitive Understanding: Our approach goes beyond memorizing words. Your child will learn the reasoning behind reading and spelling rules, so that he or she will understand and apply language concepts more deeply.

  • Emotionally Sound: Cheryl fosters a supportive, encouraging environment where your child feels safe, motivated, and confident. This positive atmosphere enhances learning and helps your child thrive.

  • Developed in the 1930s by Dr. Samuel Orton, a neuropsychiatrist, and Anna Gillingham, an educator and psychologist, this approach has been widely recognized and adapted to help students with dyslexia and other reading challenges.

From the current Director of the English Language Institute at Florida International University:

“I had the pleasure of working with Cheryl at the English Language Institute at Florida International University. She was absolutely wonderful and well-liked by her students. Cheryl was always organized, prepared, and thorough in her lectures. She motivated students to participate in class discussions and engage in meaningful conversations. She often got them to think outside of the box and use their imagination and creativity in problem-solving and critical thinking activities. Students looked forward to taking classes with her because they knew that it would be not only challenging but also interactive. She has inspired me to do the same.”

What is the Orton-Gillingham Approach?

Science of Reading

The Orton-Gillingham (OG) Approach is grounded in the Science of Reading, supported by over 30 years of research. This method teaches reading fundamentals in a systematic, personalized, and engaging way. Whether your child needs support with school-based reading programs or a comprehensive, stand-alone curriculum, OG instruction can make a difference.

Why Choose OG for Your Child?

Direct and Explicit Teaching

Students are taught in a clear and straightforward manner. The principles of explicit and direct teaching involve modeling, leading, guided practice, and review.

Structured Sequential Cumulative

Lessons are presented in a well-planned sequence. Instruction starts at the student's basic level and progresses to more advanced concepts that build upon the previous skill learned. Time is allowed for practice and review.

Customized
Courses

Instruction begins at a student’s base level which is determined by pre-assessments. Student progress is measured by progress monitoring and benchmarks given throughout the course. Parents are routinely updated on their child’s progress and open-communication is maintained throughout the course. Instruction also takes into consideration a student’s unique learning styles.

Multi-Sensory
Learning

Concepts are taught by incorporating various learning pathways: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic/tactile.
